Academic :: Attendance Policy
Regular, punctual attendance is a very important part of each student’s program at Fletcher Academy. In order to help ensure the success of every student at Fletcher Academy and to follow the proper model of stewardship as it relates to time management, the following attendance policy will be followed.
Students begin every grading period (9 weeks/quarter) with a full balance of points. Points are deducted for unexcused absences or tardies as follows:
Tardy/Absence |
Unexcused From |
Point Deduction |
Tardy |
Class |
1 point |
Absence |
Class |
3 points |
Tardy |
Chapel/WOP |
2 points |
Absence |
Chapel/WOP |
6 points |
Absence* |
Assembly |
1 point |
Absence* |
Special Study Hall |
3 points |
*There are no tardies to Assembly or Special Study Hall. If a student comes after the doors have shut, the student will not be permitted to enter and will be counted absent.
Attendance violations are cumulative. If a student runs out of points, they will move to the next attendance violation level (see below). Once an attendance violation level is reached, the student will stay at that level until the end of the school year or until they run out of points and move to the next level.
Level 1: ........................... $25.00 Fine
......................................... ½ of Total Points added
Level 2: ........................... $50 Fine
......................................... Student goes to Ad Council
......................................... 1 Day Suspension
......................................... ½ of Total Points added
Level 3: ............................Student goes to Ad Council
......................................... Subject to Dismissal
If a student who has reached a Level 2 Attendance Violation has exemplary attendance (no unexcused absences or tardies) during one of the other quarter periods that school year, he/she will move back to a Level 1 Attendance Violation at that time. A student may not move back more than one level.
An attendance grade will be given each quarter based on the number of attendance points remaining for the student at the end of the quarter as follows:
Points Remaining |
Grade Earned |
75% or more |
A |
50% - 74% |
B |
25% - 49% |
C |
1% - 24% |
D |
0% |
F |
Attendance grades are NOT included in the GPA.
It is the responsibility of the student to provide the Administrative Office with signed statements (written excuses) within 2 days of the occurrence, verifying the reason for absences/tardies in order to make up class work missed. Excuses turned in after 2 days will not be accepted, regardless of the reason, and attendance points will be deducted accordingly.
The attendance officer will accept signed statements of excuse from:
- Dormitory dean or assistant dean on duty the day the absence
occurred
- Staff member who caused the tardy or absence
- Doctor, dentist, counselor, or other professional medical caregiver
- Parent of a village student for a documented injury, illness, or a family emergency
- Work Supervisor
If a student is ill, the dean or parents of village students should notify the Academy Office and the student's work place by 8:15 a.m. A doctor's note is required for extended illnesses over 2 days. Students placed on sick list for the day are expected to remain at home or in their dorm room for the remainder of the day.
Absences/tardies resulting from unexpected delays, alarms not going off, running late, etc. are not excused – these simply use up the allotted points, which is the reason the points are given in the first place.
For any other absences, students must submit a Pre-Arranged Class Absence Request Form to Administrative Council at least a week in advance. These forms may be picked up at the Administrative Office or downloaded from the academy website. Parents are encouraged to plan family vacations during regularly scheduled breaks to ensure that the student is meeting the attendance requirements.
Community Service, School Picnics, Weeks of Prayer
These are required school activities/meetings for all students and attendance will be taken. Village parents need to make arrangements ahead of time for their student to attend so that transportation does not pose a problem.
Inclement Weather
In the case of poor road conditions due to inclement weather, parents are encouraged to use their discretion as to when/if their student is able to safely attend school/work on that day. Tardies/absences due to inclement weather will be excused once a note has been received (within two days) by the Attendance Officer.
Forfeiture of Credit
A student who, for any reason, is absent more than 15% of any class during a semester course will forfeit credit for the course unless there are chronic health conditions with special considerations involved, which must be verified by the administration. A physician's statement will determine the validity of each absence for illness over the maximum allowed. (This is a state requirement.)
