Vocational Arts
Auto Mechanics - 1
An introductory course designed to give the student a basic understanding of the automobile. Main emphasis is given to the internal combustion engine, its components, operation, and service.
Cisco Academy – Up to 2 credits
Cisco Academy is a lab class with hands-on experience designed to prepare students to obtain the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification. This certification course teaches in-depth networking concepts. Networking is tomorrow’s future and will be highly sought after in the work place. The course is made up of four classes (Network Fundamentals, Routing Protocols and Concepts, LAN Switching and Wireless, and Accessing the WAN) that will build on each other and will be taught over a two year time period, one class per semester. Desktop Publishing – 1/2
A course designed to introduce the student to layout and design of fliers, calendars and other printed material. The student will be given several real-life projects to be printed for school use.
Home Repair – 1
Homes are in constant need of upkeep and repair which can be costly. This lab course is designed to give the students the skills and techniques needed to maintain, repair and make improvements on their own. These skills include carpentry, masonry, plumbing, and electricity to name a few. This is also an opportunity to introduce to the student many potential career options.
Introduction to Agriculture - 1 (Offered alternate years)
This lab course is designed to acquaint the student with the art and science of agriculture. Topics covered will include agronomy, horticulture, animal husbandry, soil science, agricultural economics, and agricultural mechanics. Biblical, Spirit of Prophecy, and contemporary agricultural philosophy will be examined. Field trips and hands-on outdoor activities are required. Suggested prerequisite/corequisite: Biology I.
Introduction to Horticulture - 1 (Offered alternate years)
This lab course is designed to acquaint the student with the art and science of horticulture. Topics covered will include vegetable gardening, greenhouse science and management, plant propagation, soil science and fertility, landscape design and maintenance, and floriculture. Biblical, Spirit of Prophecy, and contemporary agricultural philosophy will be examined. Field trips and hands-on outdoor activities are required. Suggested prerequisite/corequisite: Biology I.
Journalism – 1/2
This is a production class for the “Fletcher Flier” school newsletter, with two main areas of instruction: Desktop Publishing and Journalism. This is an introduction to Microsoft Office Publisher. Students will learn how to create a publication and work with text and graphic objects. They will also learn the best ways to enhance a publication, improve a design, work with multiple pages, and use advanced features. Journalism develops the writing ability of students by using texts and practical experience in writing. Students in the class write news stories, editorials and features, design layout, choose headlines, and learn the art of teamwork.
Lifeskills – Up to 1 credit
The purpose of this course is to increase student knowledge and ability in skills necessary for everyday living. Topics included will be self-assessment relating to others, post secondary education, career testing and exploration, employment, consumerism, money management, housing, food, marketing and preparation, clothing choices and care. This course gives the type of knowledge needed by everyone for everyday living.
Woodworking – 1/2
This class provides an introduction to the proper use and application of tools used in the workshop with emphasis on safety. Students are introduced to various types of hardwoods and softwoods, along with joints and techniques used in furniture making. They are given the opportunity to make several projects and are involved with these projects from beginning to end.
