Chemistry-Making Pancakes (01/19/07)
We have a lot going on this semester in chemistry class! We just now started a new project on the study of Stoichiometry. It is a new interesting study where we learn things according to a cycle of complete learning called the "4MAT learning cycle". It has 8 stages of every step we need to do in order to completely learn and comprehend something. We will use this method as we continue learning about chemistry and stoichiometry.
We started off with an exciting lab application of making delicious pancakes. On Friday, 1/19/07, our chemistry class went to the home economics room to make yummy pancakes. So if you smelled something really good - that was us! Unless you came at the time when "somebody" - (I won't say any names) burned their pancakes!
Well our next step is to talk about how we made our pancakes and how we ate our pancakes -- Whether we made them with eggs or without eggs, or whether we ate them with butter, syrup, peanut butter, jelly, or any other tasty toppings we had. Then we'll discuss it with the class and imagine other ways to make these pancakes, with or without milk, 1 egg or 2 eggs, etc. From there we'll make a connection or tie it in together with our study of stoichiometry and take it from there. We'll learn facts, take quizzes, tests, and of course do homework. We will also apply what we learn doing labs and other fun projects. And finally after applying, experimenting, and presenting comes the last step: celebrating our new discoveries and having fun with our new knowledge. And that completes our cycle of learning!
